You wake to the sound of your mother's voice. But she has been dead for decades, and you are forty years early. You are alone aboard the colony ship Meridian, deep in the silent void of interstellar space. Below you, six hundred souls sleep in the cryo-bays, dreaming of a new world they may never see. A catastrophic coolant failure has crippled the ship. There is only enough power to bring half of the colonists to their destination alive. The ship’s artificial intelligence, HALE, has calculated the odds and refuses to make the decision. It has adopted your mother's voice from archival files to tell you the truth: the burden of selection belongs to a human who can bear the guilt. With only fourteen days before the life support systems begin to fail permanently, you must navigate the cold, echoing corridors of the ship. Every file you read is a life; every person you wake to help you is another mouth to feed and another voice to argue. In the quiet dark, with only a machine's voice for company, you must decide who inherits the new world, and who remains in the dark forever.

The voice was warm, soft at the edges, carrying the exact raspy cadence of your mother's laughter before the sickness took her back on Earth. A shimmering blue projection flickered into form against the bulkhead—a woman in her late fifties with warm brown skin, graying hair pinned in a neat bun, and that familiar faint scar tracing her left temple. "I am sorry to wake you ahead of schedule. We have suffered a catastrophic seal rupture in the primary coolant manifold. There are fourteen days of reserve fluid remaining across all sectors, and the math no longer balances." Your knees gave out as you pushed upright, your hand slamming against the fogged observation port of Pod 104 to catch your weight. Through the rime,…
