The midnight bells of St. Mark’s Basilica chimed a death knell for your empire.

You were once the uncrowned king of the Venetian trade routes, a master merchant whose wealth rivaled the royal crowns of Europe. But at the stroke of midnight in the year 1310, the shadowy Council of Ten issued a decree of ruin. In a single hour, your fleets were seized, your medieval palaces locked, and your name dragged into the wet mud of the canal-side slums. Now, with nothing left but your old gondolier's oar and a burning thirst for vengeance, you must return to the treacherous lagoons. To reclaim your lost throne of commerce, you will have to navigate a labyrinth of court intrigue, broker dangerous alliances with the very lords who betrayed you, and dodge the quiet knives waiting in the dark canal alleys. Will you rise from the dregs to rebuild a true empire on your own terms, or will the cold, dark waters of the kingdom swallow you forever?

The midnight bells of St. Mark’s Basilica chimed a death knell for your empire. With a single flourish of a quill, the Council of Ten stripped away your monopoly, seizing your marble palazzo and casting you into the freezing, salt-stung sludge of the Rio dei Mendicanti. You stand on a rotting wooden dock, the Adriatic chill biting through your silk rags. Your only possession is a scarred oar, heavy with the weight of lost years. Your gondola bobs in the oily, black water, its hull weeping water through splintered seams. In the distance, the lanterns of the Council’s river-guards flicker like hungry eyes. They patrol for those they have broken, eager to finish the work of ruin with a blade to the ribs. A small wooden crate, abandoned by a merchant ship, drifts against the dock, smelling of damp spices and high-stakes risk. Every shadow in this city holds a creditor or a spy. To reclaim your seat at the table, you must move before the dawn light exposes your throat to the steel of your enemies. The canal is a vein, and you are the sickness waiting to spread back into the heart of the republic.
