The Guadalquivir River churns under the hulls of five heavily laden ships as the expedition prepares to depart Seville.

You are a young sailor on the docks of Seville, your hands still smelling of tar and orange oil, watching Ferdinand Magellan's carracks tilt toward a horizon no map can yet explain. The sun glows on rigging and ambition alike as the flotilla prepares to push west into waters spoken of in rumors and nightmares. Every sailor aboard knows this voyage could fill chests and chronicles—or leave men nameless beneath the waves. The world beyond the pillars of Hercules waits, vast and indifferent. You stand at the edge of a narrow world: days of calm that eat at courage, sudden storms that strip sails to ribs, strange coasts where tongues and customs cut like wind, and nights when navigators read the heavens for truths no man has held before. Loyalty, cunning, and nerve will be measured by the creak of timbers and the sting of loss. The promise of spices, glory, and a new understanding of the globe tugs you forward, but every dawn brings a new test of whether you and your comrades will shape history—or be swallowed by it.

Beside him, Duarte Barbosa checked a manifest against the cargo being hoisted into the flagship’s hold, his steel morion catching the fierce morning glare. A stir on the cobblestones drew Mateo's gaze toward Juan de Cartagena. The King's inspector swept through the press of dockhands, his velvet doublet and gold chain pristine despite the dust. Cartagena cast an icy look across the Portuguese mariners gathered around Ferdinand Magellan's banner, pausing his stride to mutter a sharp remark to a cluster of Castilian officers about foreign command and sovereign rights. Tension between the Spanish nobility and the Portuguese captain-general had poisoned the docks for weeks, yet the King’s commissions were signed, and the tide would soon serve. Ba…
