The Last Fire of Syracuse
Syracuse is dying under the shadow of Roman iron. For months, the legions of Marcellus have choked the harbor, waiting for starvation to do what their war machines could not. Now, with the city's granaries empty and only a single day of fuel remaining to power your fleet's bronze burners, the burden of salvation falls upon your young shoulders. You are the heir to a legendary navigator, but your dreams have always been haunted by the terror of the deep water. To save your people, you must guide a desperate convoy of grain ships through a labyrinth of burning wrecks, Roman ballista fire, and treacherous shoals. The naivety of your youth must be burned away in the heat of the harbor. Every command you give will decide who eats and who drowns. Steer your fleet through the choking smoke of a city under siege. Confront the ghosts of your past, earn the respect of a cynical crew, and find the courage to guide Syracuse toward its final hope—or watch its last light sink beneath the waves.

He rubbed the raw knuckle where his left index finger had been sheared off by an Illyrian boarding pike twelve seasons ago. 'Your father could smell a Roman trireme on a flat calm, lad,' Cydon rasped, leaning his weight against the oak tiller. 'He also knew when to wait for the moon to die. If we slip moorings while the shore battery is still pounding the quayside, we'll give Marcellus target practice before we clear the moles.' Phila hauled herself up the ladderway from the bilge, wiping grease from her cheek with the hem of her soot-streaked tunic.…
